The dynamism of its businesses places the Alsace region as one of the leaders of the French economy. Indeed, situated at the heart of the Rhineland Europe, Alsace is very open to international trade.

The tertiary trade sector is now the principal driving force behind its growth, yet Alsace remains one of the most industrialised regions in France, containing industries of the automobile sector, of the mechanical equipment sector, the agri-food sector, the textile sector, the chemical sector, the electronics sector and, more recently, the biotechnology and health sector.

Moreover, the adoption of a policy of structuring of poles of competences by the Alsace regional council has left its mark on the Alsatian economy. This policy aims at giving more coherence and visibility to certain sector of competences recognised as elements of attraction for manpower and firms.

The structured poles are:

• Biotechnologies pole : Very large sector called “life and health”

• Biopole of Colmar : Pole based on the vegetal sector.

• Alsace Materials Pole and Nanosciences: Competence in Physic and Chemistry

• Textile pole

• Automobile pole

• Image Pole

• Photonic Pole

• Environment Pole

For more information, click on Pôles de compétence et pôles de compétitivité

However, we have to precise that among these pole of competences only three have been entitled “pole of competitiveness” by the State.

Those promote the apparition, the financing and the implementation of projects associating firms and public laboratories, brought by the economic forces and accompanied by the public powers.

The three poles of competitiveness are:

• The « therapeutic innovations » pole: This pole of competitiveness belongs to the 16 “world” projects which have been selected, based on two axis: “from gene to medicine” and “imaging and chirurgical and medical robotic”.

• The « vehicle of the future » pole: It develops three thematics: “clean vehicle”, “clever vehicle”, and “excellence of the field”.

• The “Great Eastern Natural Fibres” Pole: It concerns the sectors of textiles, woods, and paper and composite materials.
